Venice votes for Independence from Italy

Indipendenza!
  • Waves of nationalism in the 1800s created new nations that had never existed in history like Germany and Italy.  Today peoples in Venice, Scotland and Catalonia are seeing the advantages of being independent.

An overwhelming proportion of people living in one of Italy‘s wealthiest areas want independence from Rome, according to the results an informal, non-binding poll announced on Friday.

The event in the Veneto region - which surrounds Venice - has attracted international attention, particularly from government-sponsored Russian media, which have drawn comparisons with recent events in Crimea.

Organizers said the pro-independence camp won with 89 per cent of the vote, against 10 per cent who wanted to remain attached to the Italian state. More than 2.3 million people - out of a local population of nearly 5 million - were said to have taken part reports Europe Online Magazine.

Voters also elected 10 "delegates" who are to put secession plans into motion. In smaller majorities, ranging from 51 to 64 per cent, voters said they would prefer an independent Veneto remain in NATO and the European Union, and adopt the euro.

The "yes" campaign had previously announced that in case of victory it would issue a "Declaration of Veneto Sovereignty" and call for a to stop all tax transfers to the central government in Rome.

“Since Veneto was annexed to Italy in the 19th century we have never felt fully Italian, as we have our own culture and traditions,” Gianluca Busato, a leader of the referendum push, told NBC News.

“We have the right to self-determination, as recognized by the United Nations," he added. "Seven of the 10 new members of the European Union have smaller populations than Veneto. If Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania can have a seat in the European Parliament, why can’t we?”
