Thor gets a sex change and Captain America goes Black

He’s red, white and blue - and black.
Changing things in the Marvel Universe

Captain America’s mantle will be taken over by his long-time ally, the Falcon, the high-flying African-American hero from Harlem, Marvel Comics announced late Wednesday.

“It’s about time,” says Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort of the change. “In 2014, this should be a thing that we shrug off, it shouldn't be seen as revolutionary, but it still feels exciting.”

Brevoort says the Falcon becomes the new Captain America at the behest of the original, Steve Rogers, who has been turned into a 90-year-old man in the most recent storyline, so fans don’t have to worry that the publisher is killing off its resident star-spangled hero again reports the Daily News.

as the next guy, but this is going too far.

The change will take place in the first issue of a new comic series, “All-New Captain America,” set to launch in November.

There’ll be plenty for his fellow Avengers to talk about at their headquarters: The announcement comes a day after Marvel took to “The View” to reveal that the new Thor would be a woman.

“We have more of a global audience than ever,” says Brevoort.

“And that just makes us more aware that we have more readers of different backgrounds who are hungry for characters who come from circumstances like their own. Our creators take that seriously.”

Reaction to the proposed change was mixed, with fans taking to Marvel's Facebook page to rail against changes to their childhood heroes.

Many questioned how the plot line will allow for this mysterious woman to take over the hammer of Thor, speculating on whether she is a long-lost relative.

But Marvel has said simply that the new character using the power of Mjölnir - the hammer - is Thor.
.
'This new Thor isn't a temporary female substitute - she's now the one and only Thor, and she is worthy!' Marvel editor Wil Moss said.
.
'The inscription on Thor's hammer reads "Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor." Well it's time to update that inscription.'

In a statement Marvel said the new look Thor will be the eighth lead female protagonist, as the publisher tries to open up comics to more women.
